Project I : Lighting & Acoustic Performance Evaluation and Design

  • To understand the lighting and acoustic characteristics & requirement in a suggested space.

  • To critically report and analyse the space

Students are to form a group of SIX (6) to observe, evaluate, analyse and report on lighting and acoustics performance of their selected case study building. For the case study, students are to choose a building that has lighting and acoustic features that can be studied. Examples of buildings could be a; restaurant, café, lounge, auditorium, and any similar buildings. Each group is also to produce a measured drawing with appropriate scale of the case study and include all the necessary features which effect on the lighting and acoustics conditions to the selected building. Then the students are to carry out appraisals on day-lighting, artificial lighting, noise and sound condition (quality and quantity) in the selected case study. Their identification of adequacy of the quantity of light and sound/noise for the case study needed to be carried out objectively.

For Lighting:

  •  The site conditions (sky condition, building orientation, etc.).

  •  Take readings of daylight level, lighting level and photos (digital images) in the chosen case study at different times of day (peak and non-peak time).

  •  Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions.  Daylighting and lighting condition (identify the problems).

  •  Present a lighting contour diagram.

  •  Present all your findings graphically as much as possible.

  •  Provide the calculation for the existing design.

For Acoustic:

  •  The general site conditions (e.g. highway, main roads adjacent to your case study).

  •  Take readings of sound level indoor and outdoor and photos (digital images) in the chosen case study at different times of day (peak and non-peak time).

  •  Quantitative analysis is required in order to present your findings in conclusions.

  •  Indoor and outdoor noise (identify the problems)

  •  Present noise contour diagram.

  •  Present all your findings graphically as much as possible

  •  Provide the calculation for the existing design.

Project II : Integration

Each student is to identify two (2) significant spaces in their final design for implementing the artificial and the daylighting strategies (PSALI). Students are to produce to followings throughout this project:

1. A brief site analysis

2. Overall floor plan (appropriate scale)

3. Floor plans of ‘Space A’ and ‘Space B’

4. Sections of ‘Space A’ and ‘Space B’

5. Reflected ceiling plans

6. Lighting contours

7. Types of lamps to be used

8. To determine reflectance on walls, ceilings, floors

9. Daylighting calculation

10. Lumen method calculation

11. Lighting design proposal

All of the above are related to your individual building design. Within your building design, you are required to identify spaces which require artificial lighting and daylighting. Integration must be solution based and you are advised to incorporate visuals, and related diagrams. Calculations to resolve your design integrations solutions must be attached in A4 and submitted together. All kind of proposals need to have a good justification.
