ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2

PROJECT 1 : FAMOUS PEOPLE, FAMILIAR FACES
DIAGRAMATIC ABSTRACTION

OBJECTIVES

To investigate and to explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics.- solid, planes, lines and frames. Upon completion of the project student should be able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept to their project later.

Each group of students are given the chance to choose an architect and their works which they are familiar with and are assigned to do a series of research and abstraction models based on their concepts and architectural style and language which could be translated into a form of easily understandable mass models that clearly represents the work.

By completing this project i am able to achieve multiple designated learning outcomes that would further benefit me in my studies and pursue or architecture. Here are the few learning outcomes that I've obtain through finishing this project.

  • Ability to identify master architects and their works

  • Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.

  • Ability to ‘diagram’ and analyse architectural work of selected architect

  • Ability to produce quality diagrammatic models

  • Ability to disect and understand the concept and intention of the architect and thier works

  • Ability to produce proper understandable diagrammatic explaination board

PROJECT 2a :  Introduction to Site Analysis & Picnic Pavilion at Port Dickson

USER & CONTEXT

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project is to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation (which relates to project 1), with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. Students will be shown the importance of using the art of crafting and making: drawing(s) and model(s) as a critical design tool as part of the design process.

This project is seperated into 2 groups which consists of different site from Port Dickson, and students are assigned to perform detailed site analysis that consists of different aspects on the site for example, climate, density of trees, circulation, etc. After collecting sufficient data from the site, students are required to do a verbal - visual presentation based on the data collected to further understand what is missing and what to improve.

Picnic pavilion

is based on the concept of distortion and the feeling of surrealism, where the user's picnic experience inside the pavilion is surreal and the proportion of everything inside the pavilion would look distorted.

By doing so, the user's experience would most likely be disturbed or troubled and it would change their perception of the world after entering the pavilion where most usual objects would not look usual.

Being welcomed by a tight dark passage sparks the creativity and anticipation of the user throughout the passage guided by a beam of light and after the passage the user is welcomed by two piece of vertical mirror where one of them is distorted therefore creating an illusion of the user being seperated into two dimension of reality and imagination. Multiple reflective surface stretches thoughout the pavilion and distorted slits frames the view outside as though it was Salvador Dali's perception of the world.

D A L I - L I O N

Salvador Dalí was born on May 11, 1904, in Figueres, Spain. From an early age, Dalí was encouraged to practice his art and would eventually go on to study at an academy in Madrid. In the 1920s, he went to Paris and began interacting with artists such as Picasso, Magritte and Miró, which led to Dalí's first Surrealist phase. He is perhaps best known for his 1931 paintingThe Persistence of Memory, showing melting clocks in a landscape setting. The rise of fascist leader Francisco Franco in Spain led to the artist's expulsion from the Surrealist movement, but that didn't stop him from painting. Dalí died in Figueres in 1989.

By completing this project i am able to achieve multiple designated learning outcomes that would further benefit me in my studies and pursue or architecture. Here are the few learning outcomes that I've obtain through finishing this project.

  • Ability to properly research and survey the important components of a building site

  • Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.

  • Ability to ‘diagram’ and analyse architectural work of selected architect

  • Ability to produce quality conceptual models

  • Ability to disect and understand the concept and context of the client and site

  • Ability to produce proper understandable presentation board

  • Importance of spatial experience that relates to the client and context

  • Ability to consider the environmental factors and implement it into architecture

PROJECT 2B : Beach House at Port Dickson

OVERALL CONSIDERATION AND UNDERSTANDING

OBJECTIVES

  • To introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design

  • To introduce students’ to the understanding of user specific design requirements

  • To introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design

  • To introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis

MEMORAIL_BEACH HOUSE

The aim of this design to aimed towards being a memorial instead of a conventional beach house. Dali used to live in a beach house before he shifted to the Dali - Gala Castle.

Dali spent most of his years in Port Illigat located in Spain and he created many of his famous works there which includes the painting "The Persistance of Time". Aside from that, the original Port Illigat House is actually a compilation of all his works and memory which made it so eclectic and unique in so many ways. Therefore with all these concrete impact that this "Beach House" had given him, this design aims to create a memorial beach house which reminds him of his prime time and old home and being a creative workplace for him during a retreat.

By completing this project i am able to achieve multiple designated learning outcomes that would further benefit me in my studies and pursue or architecture. Here are the few learning outcomes that I've obtain through finishing this project.

  • Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.

  • Ability to produce quality conceptual models

  • Ability to disect and understand the concept and context of the client and site

  • Ability to produce proper understandable presentation board

  • Importance of spatial experience that relates to the client and context

  • Ability to consider the environmental factors and implement it into architecture

  • interpret and analyse simple site context

  • interpret and analyse client’s character and needs in relation to the design of a small building

  • design a simple building type that meets user requirements and respect site context that balances both internal (architectural spaces/layout/circulation) and external (aesthetics and forms) design values
